Nintendo Switch 2 Games Will Be Released in Three Phases

As Nintendo prepares for an official event to unveil the Nintendo Switch 2, the company remains silent regarding the hardware, software, and release date of the new console. However, according to a new report by Tom Henderson from Insider Gaming, Nintendo is reportedly targeting a June 2025 launch for the Switch 2.

Reports indicate that Nintendo has structured its game release strategy for the Switch 2 more systematically compared to the original Switch. Unlike its predecessor, which launched with a mix of first-party and third-party titles, the Switch 2's games will be released in three distinct phases:

Phase 1:

  • Focused on first-party Nintendo titles, released during the console's launch window.
  • Expected to include new entries in popular Nintendo franchises.

Phase 2:

  • Scheduled between October and November 2025.
  • Will introduce third-party games to the console.

Phase 3:

  • Expected between December 2025 and January 2026, aligning with the holiday season.
  • Specific details remain unclear.

Many developers who spoke with Henderson at GDC 2025 have not yet received Nintendo Switch 2 development kits. These developers are expected to gain access to the hardware around the time of the console’s launch window in June/July 2025.

If the June/July 2025 release date is accurate, Nintendo has taken measures to prevent supply shortages. A report from earlier this month suggested that Nintendo has already begun shipping Switch 2 units to North America. The Vietnamese manufacturer HVBG has reportedly exported around 383,000 units of the console to the United States.

Additionally, Nintendo appears to be developing new accessories for the Switch 2. Recent filings with the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) reveal that a new GameCube-style controller is in development. This controller, labeled BEE-021, follows the BEE prefix, which has been used for Nintendo Switch 2-related products.

The first official showcase of the Switch 2 took place in January 2025 through a Nintendo-released video. While the hardware details were limited, the new console design and a different Joy-Con attachment mechanism were revealed.

The Switch 2 is expected to feature a larger display, softer color tones than its predecessor, and a new C button, whose exact function remains unknown. However, Nintendo patents suggest that it may be linked to a built-in voice chat feature at the system level.
