Crystal Dynamics Lays Off Staff Amid Tomb Raider Development

Crystal Dynamics, the studio behind the Tomb Raider franchise, has announced layoffs affecting 17 employees. In an official statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the studio explained that the decision was difficult but necessary to align with current business needs and ensure long-term success.

"This morning, Crystal Dynamics made the tough decision to part ways with 17 talented team members. This was not an easy choice, but it was ultimately essential to meet our business requirements and secure the studio’s future. These changes do not reflect the dedication or abilities of those affected. We understand the challenges this brings and are supporting them with severance packages and job placement assistance."

Tomb Raider Development Continues Unaffected

Crystal Dynamics reassured fans that these layoffs will not impact the studio’s ongoing projects, including the upcoming Tomb Raider game. Originally announced in December 2022, the new title is being published by Amazon Games. However, details remain scarce, with only a few concept images revealed so far. No release window or gameplay footage has been shared yet.

This isn't the first time Crystal Dynamics has faced restructuring. In 2023, the studio was affected by Embracer Group’s cost-cutting measures, which led to studio closures and project cancellations across multiple teams.

Live-Action Tomb Raider Series in Development

Beyond the new game, a live-action Tomb Raider series is also in the works. According to reports, Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones) has been cast as Lara Croft.

The series, produced by Amazon Prime Video, was officially greenlit in May 2024. The show’s writer and executive producer is Phoebe Waller-Bridge, known for her award-winning work on Fleabag and other major projects.

While Crystal Dynamics navigates these changes, the Tomb Raider franchise remains active in both gaming and entertainment, with fans eagerly awaiting more updates on both the game and the upcoming series.
